Lemon verbena, also called “fragrant verbena” and “herb Louisa,” is a shrub with a woody stem 2 to 3 meters high. Its leaves are spiked and have a very short petiole with a prominent central vein. They are very rich in secretory glands that release a fine lemon fragrance. Verbena flowers are small white, bluish on the outside, grouped in terminal spikes. The fruit is a drupe with two locules each containing a seed, but the seeds do not germinate in European climates.

Lemon verbena was brought from Latin America in the 18th century by the naturalist Joseph Dombey. "Of all the plants he made known to us," wrote his first biographer Joseph Philippe François Deleuze in 1804, "the most interesting is the verbena with a lemon fragrance. Of all the plants which can be cultivated in Europe, it is the one whose foliage has the most delicious perfume."

The botanists of the Royal Garden of Madrid, who described the plant in the 1770s, paid tribute to the princess of Asturias, Maria Louisa, young daughter of Louis XV, by giving the plant the name "herb Louisa.“

Later, The plant was widely cultivated in Grasse for perfumery, to make liquorice and for the herbtrade.
